The Ghostly, Mythic, Tarot & Fairy Tale musings of Lisa Hunt

Mockingbird-Shapeshifter, Women in Fantasy Illustration and other news.

| April 2, 2014

“Mockingbird teaches a valuable lesson about mimicry. What we mimic in our lives will be reflected back to us in our experiences, which allows us to see what we truly are or what we are striving to become.” ~ The Healing Wisdom of Birds by Lesley Morrison

The finished Ostrich-Shapeshifter: From challenge to triumph.

| February 20, 2014

Ostrich was one of the birds I relegated to the end of the list. I was intimidated by the prospect of drawing such a gargantuan avian creature—the largest bird in the Winged Enchantment series. Eventually I began doodling around in my sketchbook with the idea that I wanted this piece to properly reflect a “grounding of spirit to earth” (reference: Lesley Morrison). I didn’t want to stick its head in the sand…

Almost there.

Over 3 years and about 2,000 cups of coffee later, here we are down to the wire.
Bird on a wire that is. Why has the Winged Enchantment Oracle taken so long?

Finished Kingfisher-Shapeshifter, works-in-progress, and colorful inspiration

| October 11, 2013

Here’s the finished Kingfisher-Shapeshifter watercolor painting. I actually started painting this piece while I was sick—and kind of dragged my feet in the process. But I found comfort in the soothing waters I was rendering with paintbrush. The act of painting served as a form of healing visualization. It helped bring my body and mind into balance, just like the elements of this piece. Art has been a reliant therapy on so many levels for me. It helps keep my engines tuned-up…

Enjoy your messes while you can!

| September 17, 2013

I was talking to a neighbor of mine who recently became an empty nester. She told me that now that kids are all grown up and gone, her house is in perfect order: neat, clean and quiet. Before I could tell her how happy I was for her (because my own house is hopelessly disorganized and loud with kids, cats, and creativity), her eyes welled up. She told me “Enjoy your messes. It’s life. Enjoy it while you have it because one day you are going to miss it all…”

Flying free as a bird–the power of sketching

| August 20, 2013

For the past few weeks, I’ve been flying free as a bird through the power of sketching. These gut-driven swoops of the pencil help to break the mental sound barriers allowing ideas to spill over into consciousness…

Dealing with the Chaos Monster

| May 30, 2013

I pride myself on consistency, efficiency and productivity, but April-May turned out to be a long dance with the Chaos Monster. Not all chaos is negative, sometimes we need this kind of whirling energy to get things done! At other times It adds to life’s challenges that call for one to prioritize and sacrifice the illusion of perfection…

The finished Duck-Shapeshifter, a messy palette and good news for Ghosts & Spirits Tarot.

| March 27, 2013

The Duck-Shapeshifter is reflective and quiet. It was painted with lachrymose intent enhanced by expressive faces hidden in the elements. I know for myself, sometimes stressful situations actually help fuel the art-making process. It starts when emotions well up inside and provide a zestful energy that is vital for soulful creative output. I think for me, art has been an unwavering friend that helps me keep things in perspective…

Winged Enchantment update, new Shapeshifter Tarot release and gardening in Florida.

| February 15, 2013

Winged Enchantment Oracle update: 23 paintings done, 15 more to go! It’s hard to believe that I signed a contract for Winged Enchantment nearly three years ago. It’s harder still to believe that my first deck Shapeshifter Tarot was published fifteen years ago. Needless to say, I’ve grown from a young, intrepid artist eager to […]
